ultramontane

Hey guess what? Through some sort of miracle + kindness on the part of the instructor + dumb luck, I passed my test today! That's 11 classes down, 5 to go...well and four papers I haven't even thought about writing...but still. Yay! 

There are instructors who if you stumble through describing the concept "in the late 1800s, central Switzerland remained resolutely Catholic and oriented itself towards the Pope" but can't remember the word for this (Übermontanismus? Transmontanismus?) will think you are an idiot and/or didn't study. But this guy seemed happy that I remembered the concept at all and then just gave me the world - Ultramontanismus - from which I just learned that there is an actual English word "ultramontane" which means, according to Google:

1. advocating supreme papal authority in matters of faith and discipline.

2. situated on the other side of the Alps from the point of view of the speaker.

I'm sure that's going to come in handy someday. Or, you know, not.
