a therapy prayer

The keyword from therapy this week was "unbewusste Inszenierung." Unconscious staging? I can't pretend to know exactly what this means as a technical term in psychotherapy - Google indicates that it's probably Freudian - but it's something about involuntarily engineering a situation in which an unconscious or conscious-but-repressed wish gets fulfilled.

Like, say, your friend invites you to come to dinner and you don't want to go, but you don't feel like you can turn down the invitation, so you say "yes" and then you're committed. But the night before the party your throat starts feeling odd, and by the next afternoon it hurts so much that you have to call the host and cancel, and then you spend the next three days in bed suffering from strep throat (and/or a guilty conscience).

LET US PRAY for the courage to hold space for our own unique truths, so that we can free ourselves and our loved ones from the sticky web of self-doubt and uncertainty that grows out of denial and fear, and claim the power that comes with being true to our deepest selves.

(Praying, um, for a friend, obviously.)
