Practical Theology class quote of the day, from liberation theologian Jon Sobrino (who ran afoul of the Vatican for crazy ideas like this):

Die Frage der Theodizee stellt sich als eine wesentlich praktische: im selben Mass, wie der Glaube an den Gott Jesu dazu führt, das Elend in der Welt wirklich zu überwinden, ist Gott gerechtfertigt, auch wenn man es niemals theoretisch erreicht, Gott und das Elend miteinander zu versöhnen"

"...the transition from theodicy to anthropodicy: how do we justify injustice to people living in unjust conditions? In the end the solution to this problem is not found in 'thinking of' God in such a way that God and suffering are reconciled, but instead in the task of creating a world that lives up to God. ... The question of theodicy reveals itself to be, in essence, a practical one: our belief in the God of Jesus is justified exactly in as much as that belief leads to a real reduction of suffering in the world - even if we never manage to reconcile God and suffering theoretically."

And when our belief has created suffering? Led to physical and spiritual violence? Acted in concert with unjust systems? We are called to great humility, much more in line with

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
    and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
    and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
